Retro: War grave puzzle solved

Comment Bubble Comments (0) Printer Print Article

A CHRONICLE reader has solved our most recent Retro mystery.

Retro’s David Cliffe found the postcard in his archives, but with no names visible on the graves he was at a loss to track the graveyard down.

But Philip Hansom, of Reading, who works at the War Graves Commission in Maidenhead, and dug around in their own archives after seeing this photo in last week’s Chronicle.

He said: “It’s St Sebastian’s Church in Nine Mile Ride in Wokingham. There are 34 war graves there plus other non-war graves. I thought the picture looked familiar, and managed to find a copy on our website.”

Wokingham man Edwin Weaver, 78, also got in touch.

He said: “I was a choir boy there when the war broke out, I recognised it from your picture. The war graves are cleared before Remembrance Day.”
