VISITORS braved traditional bank holiday showers by flocking to the Swallowfield Show.

The two-day event was organised by Swallowfield Horticultural Society (SHS), which had a tent full of prize-winning fruit, vegetables and flowers, photography, artwork and cookery.

Hants & Berkshire Ferret Club put on a show of what their furry beasts do best, there were classic cars and motorcycles, and plenty of arena acts including a falconry display and dog agility.

Society chairwoman Roberta Stewart said on Monday afternoon: “It’s as full as it’s ever been. Considering it’s been overcast and there has been a bit of rain today, people have flocked in their thousands.”

Rosie Allen, from Tilehurst, was in SHS’ tent.

Mrs Allen, who was with her daughter Susan Clarke, granddaughter Lucy Clarke, 10, and grandson Ashley Clarke, five, says she and her family have been coming to the show “for years” and said: “It’s good here and it seems bigger this time.

“It makes a nice change and there’s always plenty to see. We’re just having a look round.”

Hazel Moreton had made the trip from Odiham in Hampshire with her daughter, six-year-old Georgia Moreton,

Mrs Moreton said: “Events like this are great because you meet people here that you haven’t seen for a while. It brings people together and everyone’s in a really good mood.”
