A CHURCH is celebrating its green credentials after winning an award for parishioners’ work.

Caversham Heights Methodist Church has won an Eco-Congregation Award of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland.

Mayor of Reading, Cllr Peter Beard, presented Reverend Dermot Thornberry with the plaque, making the Highmoor Road place of worship the first in Reading to achieve the prize.

It follows four years’ work by a small group of the congregation, including encouragement from former church minister, Revd Rosemary Fletcher.

Churches applying for the award, which is valid for three years, must demonstrate how they care for and consider many aspects of the environment in which their members live.

The church provides a home for many local groups including a pre-school, the 2nd Caversham Girls’ Brigade Company, a flower club, a Women’s Institute group, a Townswomen’s Guild, the Red Cross and the Polio Fellowship.

Ten years ago, the church established a partnership with the United Church of Zambia in Mindolo in the north of the African country, for which it provides spiritual, financial and material support.
