Church hopes to reach out to community

A COLEY church is planning to demolish its 19th Century building and become a “community hub”.

St Saviour’s Christian Centre has applied for planning permission to replace its Victorian church with a new, two-storey building that could provide more community services, including a day nursery, youth centre and counselling service. The plans for the site at the corner of Berkeley Avenue and Wolseley Street would also incorporate a book shop and an outdoor play area. It would mean demolishing the original 1880 red brick building, but keeping the 1990 extension.

St Saviour’s, an Elim Pentecostal church, sent letters to 300 nearby residents to get feedback and put the plans on display. The deadline for comments to Reading Borough Council is September 4. Senior pastor Billy Fenning declined to comment on the application until a decision is made by the planning committee. The date for the meeting has not yet been set.

Contact the council on 0800 626 540.
