New skate park brightens up recreation ground
By Adam Hewitt
THE £180,000 project to brighten up a grotty Twyford park is finally over.
The sparkling new King George V recreation ground had its grand re-opening on Saturday, thanks to work by Wokingham Borough Council, Twyford Parish Council, Twyford Village Partnership and local young people, who were the driving force behind the improvements after handing in two petitions.
Contaminated land had to be cleaned up and a new skate park and ball park was built.
Matt Stain, 13, said: “It’s been a long time coming, but it is great to finally have somewhere to skate.”
After the ribbon cutting on Saturday, the proud skaters showed off their skills to an impressed audience, while local band Coopers Rage provided the music.
The borough council’s sports team also ran netball matches.
Deputy community development leader, Cllr Malcolm Bryant, said: “The project is wonderful news for the young people of Twyford who have waited patiently for this work to be undertaken.
“Skateboarding plays an important role in the lives of many young people and it is important we develop facilities that fit in with what they need. And not only have they got a skate park, they also have a new ball park, on which they can play basketball, netball and a whole other range of sports.”
