A CAVERSHAM school enjoyed perfect weather for an afternoon of fundraising and fun.

Thameside School in Wolsey Road welcomed parents, family and friends into its grounds for a summer carnival, complete with stalls, games and activities for all ages.

When The Chronicle caught up with Helen, Katie and Max Berrisford, from nearby Chester Street, they were manning the book stall.

Mum Helen said: “It’s good to support events like this because it’s a great fundraising opportunity.

“We used the money we raised last year to buy equipment for the reception class.”

Guests were treated to a carnival parade by year one youngsters, featuring hand-carried floats dressed as a desert island, complete with parrot, and as a Medieval castle.

Teacher Ingrid Burton revealed the island float had a Caribbean theme, while youngsters spent two afternoons designing and making their own costumes.

Ingrid’s daughter, six-year-old Josie, was dressed as a princess to accompany the Medieval float and said: “There were also knights and dragons on my float.

“I loved dressing as a princess.”

Six-year-old Emily Lewis, who was on the Caribbean float, said: “I made my costume all by myself.

“I used tissue paper and felt and little stars.”

A talent show in the school hall proved a popular attraction, with a drum solo, hanky juggling and cheerleading dancers just some of the acts to wow the audience.

The show was split into two categories, with the key stage one section jointly won by year two youngster Wiktoria Kubinska for a gymnastics routine, and reception class pupil Prerna Venkataramanan for an Indian dance.

Key stage two winners were the cheerleading dancers, made up of Abbie Wright, Emma Thompsett and Alison Rice-Murphy, all in year five, and Erin-Blaise Woodray in year four.

The event raised £1,150, which will be spent on equipment for the school’s outdoor learning area.
