Toad Hall squatters evicted
By Alex Gore
SQUATTERS who have been illegally living in the farmhouse that inspired Kenneth Grahame’s Wind In The Willows have been evicted.
The group had been living in Coombe End Farmhouse, near Whitchurch, since April after it had been left vacant since the last occupants moved out in 2006.
Land owner the National Trust carried out the eviction and is examining options for restoring and conserving the house, which is believed to have been used by Grahame as the model for Ratty’s house.
National Trust spokesman Fliss Coombs said: “The squatters were living in Coombe End Farmhouse illegally so we went through the proper legal process to have them evicted.
“We are now looking at various conservation plans and considering any options for the property’s future. We certainly want to safeguard it.”
