A DERELICT shop will come back to life at the end of the month as a late-opening supermarket.
Somerfield has bought the premises which housed Reading’s Fopp store in West Street in the town centre until the chain went into receivership last summer.
The £500,000 supermarket will open at 9am on Thursday (29) and then stay open seven days a week from 6am-midnight.
Its nearest competitor, Sainsbury’s in Friar Street, is open from 7am-9pm, and from 11am-5pm on Sundays. West Street links Broad Street and Friar Street, two of the town’s busiest shopping areas.
Somerfield regional manager Matthew Main said: “The new store will cover 2,187 square feet of retail space and will sell a wide range of products including fresh fruit and vegetables, a variety of snacks and ready meals as well as hot food and freshly-brewed coffee.”
The supermarket chain already has branches in Sonning Common, Charvil, Pangbourne and Woodcote, but the new store will be its first in Reading town centre and will create around 20 jobs. It is one of 50 new Somerfields likely to open this financial year in a nationwide expansion programme.
Mr Main added: “As well as bringing a new local grocery to local people, the store will also generate some new job opportunities.”
