Hospital clock tribute to wife
A CLOCK restorer has completed his most personal piece of work to date.
David Card has painstakingly constructed a replica of the clock which welcomed visitors to the Royal Berkshire Hospital for over 150 years, a time piece he has been personally involved with for more than three decades and a moving tribute to his late wife.
In the 1970s David was asked to restore the original clock which had graced the London Road entrance of the hospital since it was first opened.
The family link to the clock continued when his daughter’s boyfriend, Paul Hyatt, member of the hospital estates team, regularly climbed up to wind it, but several years ago the clock was stolen.
Last year David’s wife, Julie, was admitted as a patient to the RBH. She was eventually transferred to Harefield Hospital where she died.
David said: “Hospitals are very lonely places at night and I used to go and sit in the chapel for comfort. One night I promised to myself that I would replace the clock. It is a memorial to my wife.”
On May 19, David will officially present the new clock to Colin Maclean, chairman of the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust .
