Gym 'minutes' from catching fire

Printer Print Article

AN Oxford Road gym was minutes from catching fire say crews after a carelessly discarded cigarette set alight rubbish at the back of the building.

Fire fighters were called to a fire at the back of Express Gym at 9.30pm last night, and watch manager at Dee Road Station Steve Andrews said: "Rubbish had been put against the building and accidentally set on fire, probably by someone not putting a cigarette out properly.

"A bin a bit bigger that the normal wheelie bin had caught fire, but the building itself was minutes away from becoming involved and that would have been a whole lot worse. The fire did affected the building's air conditioning system and the seal of the roof.

"I would urge people to make a secure area for their rubbish and not place bins right next to buildings, because if they go up then, you're in trouble."
