VILLAGERS can now tuck into takeaways from a popular curry house after council planners gave it their blessing.

Despite receiving 18 letters of objection West Berkshire Council’s eastern area planning committee gave permission for the former Fox and Hounds pub in Mortimer, now known as The Cinnamon Tree, to offer take-away from noon until 10.30pm.

The restaurant did apply for permission to serve until 11pm but councillors chose instead to align its hours with those of the nearby Chinese restaurant which offers takeaways from 5-10.30pm.

Cllr Terry Port said: “We don’t want to give the impression that we prefer curry Madras to sweet and sour pork.”

Cllr Keith Lock said: “I think that we should align the opening times with the nearby Chinese restaurant or we will get a request from them asking if they can alter their opening hours in the future.”

But objectors warned of an increase in litter, odours and traffic and parish council representative John Morden said: “The reason we put restrictions on the Chinese takeaway is because we don’t want people coming and going at all hours.”

Cllr Keith Lock said: “I have been past on a Saturday evening and seen about 10 cars parked in the road.

“I would like to see the owners put a sign up informing people that there is a car park at the back.”
