Family's hotel stay after fire
A FAMILY were forced to flee their home after their tumble dryer caught fire.
The couple and their grown-up son had to spend a night in a hotel after their home was badly smoke damaged, when a tumble dryer over heated in the utility room.
Firefighters who put out the blaze in Hambledon Close, Lower Earley, late on Saturday night, have renewed calls for households to fit smoke alarms.
Wokingham Road fire station watch manager Phil Holdford said: “The house did not have a smoke alarm and we cannot stress how important it is to have these fitted.
“Luckily no-one was injured and the family did the right thing by reporting the fire and then getting out.”
Fire crews were called to the blaze around 11pm and the utility room was badly damaged by the fire.
Watch manager Holdford added: “If you would like a free home risk check, where we will fit fire alarms for free, then contact the brigade on 0800 587 6679. It could save your life.”
