ROY Beerens is on the verge of completing a move to Reading FC.

The Hertha Berlin winger is set to make the switch to Madejski Stadium for around £500,000.

Beerens, 28, will have a medical later today and could be involved in tonight's friendly against Saudi Arabian top flight side Al-Taawoun FC at Arnhem Boys’ ground (6pm ko local time).

Beerens, who has impressed boss Jaap Stam on pre-season tour in Holland this week, will sign a three-year contract.

The Dutchman, who saw an earlier move to Stuttgart break down, becomes Reading's sixth signing of the summer following John Swift, Anssi Jaakkola, Joseph Mendes, Joey van den Berg and Danzell Gravenberch.

Stam has been busy rebuilding his squad after 10 of last season's first team, six of them loanees, departed in recent weeks including Aaron Tshibola to Aston Villa for £5 million.

And Swift explained his the prospect of playing under the former Manchester United and Netherlands' defender was an offer he couldn't refuse.

Swift, who turned down a new contract at Chelsea before joining the Royals yesterday, said: "Straight away when Reading and Jaap Stam came in for me, it was definitely a real option to come here because I was excited by the football the new manager was going to play.

"As soon as I heard there was interest from Reading, I was in to see the manager and it all happened really quickly.

“When I spoke to the manager, the type of football he wants to introduce suits me down to the ground. And I knew it was a really good opportunity for me to come here and play the football I want to play."

Swift followed up a successful loan at Brentford last season by helping Gareth Southgate's England Under 21s win the Toulon Tournament in May.

And the 21-year-old is confident he has the attacking skills to unlock defences in the Championship this season.

"I’m a player who likes to get on the ball and run with it, beat players and create things," he said. "But that won’t be all. I’m fit and I can get up and down the pitch.

"I want to get on the ball, create and score goals. But working hard for the team is the main thing.

“Every player has got to do that in this division and the fans want to see a player who works hard for the badge. I’ll do that, 100%, in every single game I play."

Swift, who was also loaned to Rotherham United and Swindon Town while on Chelsea's books, penned a three-year contract with the Royals with the option of a fourth.

He added: "I am able to play in three or maybe four different positions in an attacking role, so hopefully I will get some good playing time at the start of the season.

"I’ve been on loan three times now, so I’m used to coming into new groups and getting to know new teammates – and I’m looking forward to doing that again here.

“I’m here for good, so I’m really looking forward to getting to know the town and the training ground as well as my new teammates.”

Swift made only one first-team appearance for Chelsea but has now clocked up 49 in the league during his loan spells, scoring nine times.

He continued: "Last season at Brentford was a massive step for me. It was the final year of my Chelsea contract, so I didn’t think I was going to be going out on loan - but Brentford came in and I got straight into it in the first couple of games.

"Coming from Under 21 football to Championship football, it’s really hard on your body - playing Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, but I got used to it last season.

"I started to play well, got my first goal and I was playing in a new position to me which is always a good experience for a young player. It was my first taste of Championship football and I enjoyed it. Hopefully now I can build on it and do even better this year."

Meanwhile, Reading will make a decision on whether to offer Gaston Campi a contract before the team returns from Holland to the UK tomorrow.

The 25-year-old Argentine defender, who plays for Buenos Aires-based Racing Club, has been on trial with the first-team squad all week and could also feature in tonight's friendly.

Reading have also had three bids for Southend United winger, Ben Coker, turned down and are being heavily linked with Middlesbrough's 23-year-old wideman, Adam Reach.
